Welcome to Balanced Wellbeing Therapy. I am Karen Cunliffe, a qualified and professional therapeutic counsellor dedicated to supporting adults and young people in Battle, East Sussex and Gillingham, Kent.
I provide a safe space to help you navigate life's challenges currently affecting you in your day to day life including stress, anxiety, grief, trauma and depression.
Online counselling sessions are also available for your convenience.

Taking the first step toward counselling can feel daunting, but you don’t have to navigate your challenges alone. As a qualified integrative counsellor, I provide a safe, confidential space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings without judgement.
I began my own relationship with counselling and psychotherapy in my late twenties. At the time my life looked pretty okay from the outside but from the inside was anything but...... since my teens my mood had often been unpredictable and I frequently experienced periods of deep depression and isolation which were difficult to manage and I didn't understand why I so often felt like I did.
My behaviour could be self-destructive and despite my family and friends, I felt hopeless, ashamed and alone. Holding up the mask of a happy-go-lucky young woman became a weight that was increasingly difficult to bear.
After going to see my first counsellor I remember feeling seen and heard in a way I had never experienced and I was able to see myself more clearly. It took me a while to trust the relationship but with this support, I was able to begin to explore my behaviour and unpick what was going inside. It was a long and sometimes difficult and painful process but it was also life-changing........... and live-saving. I will be forever grateful.
Over 30 years later I know that counselling empowered me to change my life. I started to understand the "why" behind the reasons for acting like I did. What my triggers were and I found new ways to reflect on and manage my feelings and emotions. I also started to accept myself, feel calmer and live life in a way that made more sense to me. I began to heal, experience personal growth and navigate changes that supported me to move into a life where I felt a sense of purpose, value and I eventually started my own journey to become a counsellor.
My approach is rooted in the belief that every person has the inner strength to heal and grow. I work collaboratively with you to identify unhelpful patterns and develop practical strategies for emotional balance and increased resiliencr. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, trauma, or the overwhelm of daily life, my goal is to help you find your own path toward a calmer, more fulfilling future.
I welcome individuals from all backgrounds - adults and young people (aged 13 upwards) who are seeking support with a wide variety of issues and difficulties .
As a fully qualified counsellor and member of both the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society, I am committed to maintaining the highest ethical and professional standards in all therapeutic relationships.
Therapy sessions provide a time and place where you can be heard with genuine empathy, sensitivity, and complete acceptance. In the safety of our sessions, thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and confidentially, allowing your authentic self to emerge.
Whether you're navigating life transitions, relationship challenges, self-doubt, grief and loss, mood fluctuations, anxiety or depression, these experiences can disrupt how you feel about yourself and how you are dealing with difficult and challenging feelings and behaviours.They can also impact our overall wellbeing and our ability to manage our normal day-to-day life. Therapeutic work offers you practical tools and deeper insights to understand what underlies these challenges and how you can move toward greater balance, understanding, self-acceptance and resilience in your daily life.
Through our collaborative therapeutic relationship, you'll gain clearer insight into your patterns, understand your responses more deeply, and discover choices that align with your values and desired outcomes - creating a more balanced and fulfilling way of living.

In our sessions, you will have the dedicated time and space to explore your thoughts and feelings. We will work together to gain new perspectives, identify unhelpful patterns, and develop practical coping strategies that you can carry into your daily life. I believe that everyone has the capacity for growth and positive change, and my purpose is to support you on that unique journey.
Taking the initial step can often feel like a big decision or difficult. I remember how I was feeling when I decided to seek support through counselling. I wasn’t sure where or how to start - or what I really needed. It was a bit of a leap of faith into previously unchartered territory and I remember how uncertain I felt.
Deciding to seek support is the first step along the way towards growth, healing and improved mental and emotional health so you can live your life fully accepting all of who you are.
